Story

Hi Family & Friends!

Together we have decided to make a difference by creating a fundraising appeal for Interplast Australia & New Zealand.

With our support, Interplast's teams of volunteer plastic and reconstructive  surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and allied health professionals can continue to provide free surgical treatment to patients living with treatable disabilities such as cleft lip and palate, burn scars and severe hand injuries. The funds I raise as part of this incredible adventure will also enable Interplast to train the next generation of surgical leaders in the countries in which they work. Through education, training and mentoring programs we empower local medical personnel to perform life-saving procedures independently.

Kokoda has always been one of those 'one day' dreams. I was fortunate enough to meet Turia at an event in 2015, and as I heard her talk about Kokoda and the charity Interplast, I realised this was a must for me and a now thing, not a one day thing!

Turia told me with such passion about the work Interplast been able to do with the funds raised on the intrepid adventures and I knew I had to be part of it. When I researched the work Interplast have done overseas I was so excited to work with a charity that represented the same values I cherish.

Being able to raise much needed funds for such a worthy cause is such an honour, and to be able to do that and tick Kokoda of that 'one day ' list is a huge bonus!! By joining Turia's Kokoda Trek 2016 I will help Interplast repair bodies and rebuild lives throughout the Asia Pacific region. For decades, Interplast has worked on the ground in some of the world's poorest countries to provide free surgical treatment and facilitate safe, healthier and more sustainable healthcare initiatives.

10 days we will walk 96km through rugged terrain, camp in the jungle and meet local villagers. Having had a grandfather that served in Kokoda, the symbolic and sacred nature of the trek is not lost on me. I'm looking forward to trekking into history and being able to see first hand the rugged beauty  of Kokoda.

Sal Patten

Making the journey to Kokoda has been on my list of ‘Things I would love to achieve’, but until now I didn’t have the drive to carry it through. As with many of us, our increasingly hectic lives so easily get in the way of our dreams. For me, now is the perfect time to challenge myself both mentally and physically. I want to prove to myself that I can do anything I set my mind to and push myself as far as I can go.

Both my Pop and Grandpa served time in Papua New Guinea and I will walk Kokoda to not only honour their bravery and their insatiable desire to serve their country, but also to make a journey that I know my late father would have dearly loved to make. With this journey I will remember these amazing men and all that they sacrificed to provide my family the life we have today.

Being able to support a wonderful charity such as Interplast, who on a daily basis provide life changing surgery to those who are less fortunate and in dire need, makes me even more determined to get myself over the line. Having Turia Pitt by our side as we make our way through the rugged and challenging environment that is Kokoda, and knowing that this amazing woman continues to overcome her own set of challenges and push herself to succeed will show me that there is absolutely no reason why I can’t do the same.

Please support Jess and I as we look to raise much needed funds for Interplast so they can continue with the fabulous work they do. We would love to share this journey with you and thank you for any contributions or words of encouragement you can offer.

    Interplast Australia & New Zealand

For over 30 years, Interplast has worked in 25 countries and implemented over 600 surgical and allied health medical program activities across the Asia Pacific region. We provide free reconstructive surgery for patients who would otherwise not be able to afford access to such services and we empower local medical personnel by building their capacity to act independently. We’ve supported over 70 surgeons and nurses to continue part of their training in Australia, sent over 600 volunteers on medical programs, provided over 37,000 consultations and performed over 21,000 life-changing operations. Help us do more.
